For commercial event photographer every assignment offers something different. I get to do what I’m good at and have the privilege of attending events I would otherwise never experience. One of the most fascinating events I’ve had the pleasure of documenting recently was the Institute of Physics’ Celebration of Physics.
Held annually, this gathering brings together some of the brightest minds in the field, with talks ranging from cutting edge quantum research to physics education. This year’s keynote, delivered by Sir Richard Henry Friend, offered a rare opportunity to capture a figure whose contributions have helped shape modern physics.
What makes photographing academic and science focused events rewarding is the blend of energy and intellect in the room. From candid interactions over coffee to the focused concentration of an audience deep in thought, there’s a lot to document beyond the stage. For events like this, it’s about understanding the brief and how the client will use the imagery. It’s about moving discreetly and anticipating, recognising and capturing the moments that matter.
